Headquarters Western Defense Command and Fourth Army, Presidio of San Francisco, California --- Office of the Provost Marshall, April 4, 1942 / To Whom it May Concern: / At the request of Mr. M.S. Eisenhower, Director, War Relocation Authority, and at the request of Colonel Karl R. Bendetsen, Assistant Chief of Staff, Civil Affairs Division, Western Defense Command, authority is hereby granted to the bearer, Miss Dorothea Lange (Mrs. Dorothea L. Taylor), Photographer-reporter, War Relocation Authority, to be present at any Civil Control Station, Assembly Center, or Reception Center, or at or on any train or motor convoy, carrying Japanese evacuees from any area ordered evacuated. / It is requested that the bearer of this permit be accorded every reasonable opportunity to view all phases of such evacuation and to photograph the same. / (Sgd) William A.
