Tom Collins was the manager of a migrant camp in Kern County, California. He became an important link between Dorothea Lange and the novelist John Steinbeck. Collins provided both with access to the camp. Stein
Tom Collins was the manager of a migrant camp in Kern County, California. He became an important link between Dorothea Lange and the novelist John Steinbeck. Collins provided both with access to the camp. Steinbeck modeled the character of Jim Rawley in The Grapes of Wrath, after Collins. The book is partly dedicated to Collins, “who lived it."
