We put the boys in a day school . . . where they had arrangements for boarding pupils. John was only four and Dan was only seven and this was very, very hard for me to do. Even now when I speak of it I can feel the pain. —Dorothea Lange

During the Depression Lange and her husband Maynard Dixon boarded their sons so they could continue to work. Daniel Dixon later recalled that this image may have been taken by Ansel Adams.
